Robert H. Shields, 47, native of this city who rose to a place of prominence in law enforcement as a state policeman and a Marion County sheriff's officer died suddenly Sunday night at Indianapolis. Shields was stricken at his home, 1806 N. Auburn Street, Speedway and was taken to Marion County General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 6:44 p.m. Born in Crawfordsville, Shields was the son of Vernon and Bertha Griest Shields. He attended St. Bernard's school here but moved to Indianapolis with his parents and was graduated from Cathedral HS there. His father was chief of police in Crawfordsville for several years and later was a top official in the state police department. The younger Shields recently had been executive officer under Robert A. O'Neall, who at that time was serving as Marion County sheriff. In February 1962, Shields resigned the No.2 sheriff's post in Marion County to become a candidate for the office of sheriff. He lost in the November election. Shields attended FBI National Academy and Army Criminal Investigation School. Survivors incude the wife Zora; three children, Betty, William and Robert; his mother who made her home with him; and a number of cousins including, Mary, Robert, William and Hugh Brennan of this city and James Brennan of Portsmouth, VA. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Betty. Funeral services will be held 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Speedway. Friends may pay their respects at the Conkle Funeral Home in Speedway. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery at Indianapolis. - kbz

Robert Shields, former state police lieutenant and Marion County Deputy Sheriff, died suddenly Sunday night in Indianapolis. He was a native of Crawfordsville and son of Vernon and Bertha Griest Shields. His father was a Crawfordsville Polic Chief and Commander in 1922 of the American Legion post here. Survivors include several cousins of this city, Miss Mary Brennan and Robert, William and Hugh Brennan, and also James Brennan of Portsmouth, VA; the mother, the wife, Zora, and 3 children: William, Ronald and Betty.
